Restock the Bar: Kansas City Barbeque
If you have memories of the Kansas City Barbeque in San Diego, you have certainly been told by now that a fire gutted the building Thursday. From SD Union-Tribune:
The fire broke out about 2:15 p.m. in the restaurant on West Market Street, located across the street from the Manchester Grand Hyatt hotel towers and near Seaport Village. It initially created so much smoke that clouds of it could be seen billowing behind Petco Park, where the Padres were playing an afternoon baseball game.
But (assuming you’ve been there) remember the memorabilia that lined the ceiling and walls? What if you could be a part of re-building that much of the KC BBQ? Because if you have not heard the great news, Martin & Cindy are rebuilding.

Let’s Restock the KC BBQ. Do you have a cap from your ship or squadron, an old picture of friends in the barbeque? Why not take part in restoring the KC BBQ. What kind of place would it be without the ton of little things that created the physical atmosphere.
Here is the location/contact information for KC barbeque in the interim, but I’ll try to contact Martin & Cindy to see how we can help, and just where we can deliver “Restock the KC BBQ” items.
Stay tuned (and start checking your closets and attic for what you’ll send) and if you have a memory of the Kansas City Barbeque, please share it (as well as anything helpful to the Restock effort) in the comments below.

Kansas Gambling Law is Constitutional
Per the Kansas Supreme Court’s press release of June 27, 2008:
RE: Case No. 99,957: State ex rel. Stephen Six v. Kansas Lottery and Ed Van Petten
The state Supreme Court today upheld the constitutionality of the 2007 Kansas Expanded Lottery Act (KELA).
The Court, in a 22-page unanimous opinion authored by Justice Eric S. Rosen, said that “while the state is not the exclusive owner and operator of all aspects of the lottery enterprise under KELA, the state owns and operates the enterprise itself and owns and operates key elements of the lottery,” thus complying with 1986 constitutional amendments.
A summary of the opinion is here, or read the full text.

FHSU on Itunes U
While I’m at Fort Hays, how cool is FHSU on Itunes U ! Check it out:
FHSU on iTunes U is a storehouse of up-to-date
content for students, faculty, alumni, and the community. Audio
and video files can be played, downloaded, and subscribed to for
convenient access.
I remember in 1987, Dr. Hammond spoke of making FHSU a “high-tech, high-touch university.” If you’ve been paying attention since then, his success in this realm is tough to debate.

Nola Ochs, at age 95, graduates Fort Hays State
I was proud to attend the FHSU Commencement today to see my nephew graduate, but it had to warm everyone’s hearts to watch Nola Ochs stride across the stage (without assistance I might add) under a mortar board to become the world’s oldest person to earn a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year university. Dr. Larry Gould shared some very nice comments and congratulations as Ms. Ochs waited to get her diploma from Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and Dr. Edward H. Hammond. The press came and went, but the inspiration from Nola Ochs (and her graduation with her granddaughter, Alexandra) is sure to last.

Chocolate Pizza in Baldwin City, Kansas
All work and no play … anyway, I just can’t help sharing that we have a chocolate pizza seller in Baldwin City, Kansas. Check out a great article in perhaps the best online presentation of a newspaper in the country. Annette Cook and Chris Cook own and operate the Amoré Chocolate Pizza Company serving up caramel chocolate spoons and M&M chocolate pretzels. Have you tried it? Speak up. If you haven’t, I’ll bet you’ll be glad when you do. Waiting until you can get it on QVC? Maybe later this month.
